Job Summary:

The Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. The IBCLC acts as coach, consultant, teacher, and lactation expert working collaboratively with the Newborn and Intensive Care nurseries, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Family Practice, and nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate. Responsible for making clinical assessments, and uses current lactation theories and research to develop evidence-based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the physician’s and family’s breastfeeding goals.

Education:

Associate's Degree from a state approved or accredited program in nursing, health, nutrition or related field required.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification:

Certification by IBCLC (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) is required. In addition, current Oklahoma Nursing Licensure preferred. If incumbent holds an IBCLC and substantive clinical competencies, i.e., Registered Dietitian, Speech Pathologist, and Occupational Therapist, as prescribed by IBCLC may be substituted for the preference of a Nursing License. BLS Certification required. Maintain certification as lactation consultant (IBCLC).

Work Experience:

1 - 2 years related experience. Experience in teaching one on one or in small groups. Understanding of diverse cultural, physical, emotional, and psychological response to birthing, lactation, and parenting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Excellent teaching, verbal and written communication skills essential. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to maintain professionalism through conduct, appearance, communication, mutual respect, leadership, ethical decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills Demonstrate responsibility for professional practice through active participation in professional organizations.
